Sun Jan 24 - Snow date: Jan 31 1:00p - 4:00p Tu B'Shevat, The Jewish Tree Festival Tu B'Shevat is the Jewish celebration of trees. Held on or around the 15th of the month of Shevat, this holiday marks the "birthday" of trees planted in that year. In Biblical times, farmers used these dates to keep track of when they could harvest fruit from their trees and also for tax-keeping purposes. More than 300 years ago the custom of celebrating Tu B'Shevat with a seder, or ceremonial dinner, was added to the holiday's tradition. Join the celebration with the JCC Metrowest and the West Morris Section of the National Council of Jewish Women for storytelling, crafts, and the sampling of Israeli fruits, nuts and other foods. Following the Hebrew tradition, each girl will plant a cedar and each boy will plant a cypress (ages 6+ please) to take home. According to tradition, a branch from those living trees would be cut at the time of their marriage to form the chuppah, or wedding canopy. The holiday of Tu B'Shevat has become a part of "tikun olem," the Jewish call for environmental responsibility. All activities are designed for children ages 6+, supplies are limited. Free.
