| Distributed computing is the solving of a large problem by giving small parts (through the internet) of the problem to many personal computers to solve. The solutions the CPU's make are brought back together (through the internet) into a solution for the large problem. Recent distributed computing projects have been designed to use the computers of hundreds of thousands of volunteers all over the world, via the Internet, to look for extra-terrestrial radio signals, to look for prime numbers so large that they have more than ten million digits, and to find more effective drugs to fight the AIDS virus. These projects are so large, and require so much computing power to solve, that they would be impossible for any one computer or person to solve in a reasonable amount of time. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use. Now you can use you Sony Playstation3 instead of your PC to join in any of these projects. Seti -- SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. May 28, 2003 — Over 4.5 million users have joined SETI@home! http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html -- Lots of projects list here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Distributed_computing_projects http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Computer_Science/Distributed_Computing/Projects/ -- Many projects www.angelfire.com/theforce/distributedcomputing/home.html -- Many projects If you want to see more sites, do a search on Google, and type in "Distributed Computing Projects" including the quotes. | ||

| How do you pronounce Geocaching? -- You pronounce it Geo-cashing, like cashing a check. Geocaching is an entertaining high-tech GPS treasure hunt game.. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache. Good information the beginner. -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocaching Click Here to read all about it, and find locations near you !!! -- www.geocaching.com Geocaching.com no longer lists new caches without a physical object.
